The architect Minoru Yamasaki, who designed the plans, had to destroy 164 buildings in order to build the World Trade Center. At first, they had 80 floors, but it would not have enough room for the whole office. They extended it with 30 floors and they also added a 6-story basement.
Work began on 21st March, 1966. The construction period lasted for 7 years and took 200,000 tons of steel. 10,000 people worked on the site and 60 people lost their lives. The Twin Towers were 416 meters high. Each one had 99 elevators. There were office space for businesses and even fine dining. Construction costed a total of $900 million. The Twin Towers as well as the World Trade Center opened to the public on 4 April, 1973. They were the tallest towers ever built in the United States.
On the 11th of September, 2001, the first plane crashed into one of the towers and 18 minutes later, a second plane crashed into the second tower. The aircraft were flown by hijackers. 2750 people died and thousands were injured.
