presentation :

the title of this painting is nighthawks.
it was painted by edward hopper in 1942. it is 84 cms wide and 152cms long.
it is exhibited at the art institute of chicago , llinois.
E. hopper was born in 1882 and he died in 1967. he was an american realist painter.

description :

the painting represents a downtown diner and its waiter with three nightime customers, the nighthawks of the title, all lost in their thoughts.

the scene takes place in a american city , probably in new york city where hopper lived , in a diner located at the corner of a street.
The main focus is on the interior of the restaurant seen through large window panes, from the standpoint of a passer-by walking past on the sidewalk. the restaurant takes up two thirds of the painting.

It is nighttime. The streets are dark and lit by the fluorescent light of the diner.

The painting is divided into three horizontal lines.
in the foreground, we can see the clean sidewalk lit by the artificial light of the diner which also cast some shadows on the pavement. In the upper part, at the top of the diner's building, we can notice an advertisement for the cigar brand name " Phillies".
in the middle ground, there are four characters: three customers who are sitting on stools and a waiter standing behind the counter. Right in the middle of the composition, there is a first customer a man seen from behind. he is wearing a grey suit and a hat. he is holding a glass in his hand and is sitting alone.
On the right, a couple is sitting in silence, they are not looking at each other and they don't seems to communicate . The man is wearing a black suit, a blue shirt and a grey hat. He looks neat. the woman is wearing a red blouse and red lipstick. she is holding a sandwich in her right hand. the blond-haired waiter standing in front of them is wearing a white jacket and a white cap.
They all seem to be lost in their thoughts, bored, weary, or worries and although the interior of the diner is a painted in bright colours, the atmosphere is rather tensed and grim.
In the background, inside the cafe, we can notice the metalic cofee tanks and the only door, wich is a service door actually. on the left, we can see the corner where the two streets meet: dark buildings with shopwindow , and windows, wich look empty.
