I’m going to talk about the notion«
Idea of progress ». To begin with, I’d like to give a definition of progress.
Progress is the idea that the world and the society can positively evolve in terms
of science, technology, modernization, living conditions, etc. I am going to
study/analyse the idea of progress through the scientific progress. Can the
scientific progress be considered as a progress for human beings? First I will
identify the positive aspects and then the negative ones.
The
scientific progress can be seen as negative in some aspects that create a very
controversial and ethic topic. We studied this school year a document which partly
illustrates the issue. Indeed it is an extract from CHS glob Online in 2010.
This document deals with PGD which is the acronym for pre-implantation genetic
diagnosis. It is used by parents who want to make sure that their children will
not suffer from severe diseases. An ethic problem can be raised as in a (near)
future this arbitrary physical selections could be implemented. Furthermore and
apart from the medical objectives PGD could indeed serve cosmetic purposes
which would infringe ethic principles. Besides it can be seen as hazardous and incredibly
shameful because the persons would/will be used as scientific objects or guinea
pigs and this action goes against diversity. It may open the door to the
creation of ideal human beings and the part that will have been created
naturally would be weak. The persons would not fit the mould any longer This
article criticizes the fact that we could choose our baby's characteristics as
if we were playing god with human beings.
But
scientific progress can make a better world such as eradicating diseases. We
have studied this kind of aspect with a video. This video deals with a doctor
who has created a technique named gene therapy. Thanks to this new technique he
saved a little girl named Ashi who suffered from ADA which is the dysfunction
of her immune system besides she had faulty genes, because of that she was constantly
sick, she never left home except going to the hospital. In order to save her
the doctor extracted blood from Ashi and healthy genes from a donor, then he
put it in Ashi's white blood cell in a lab and finally the healthy cells are
re-injected in Ashi's blood stream. Thanks to that 6 months later Ashi was
cured, she was unexpectedly the first one to recover from such a severe disease.
Thanks to this improvement she can now be like every little girl and enjoy her
life. We also studied from USA today. This extract deals with parents who used
also PGD. They used it in order to save their daughter who was ill. She was
cured thanks to a bone marrow transplant from her brother which can be seen as
a medicine baby whose purpose was to save his sister. This story shows that
this scientific breakthrough can improve life expectancy and have outstanding
results when it comes to healing severe diseases even if it can show an ethical
issues.
To
conclude, although scientific progress can contribute to eradicate some
diseases, the ethical issue is raised: the use of such methods may cross the
red lines when does genetic selection become superficial rather than vital and
how far should the persons be allowed to go in order to save their lives. To my
mind I think that genetic selection should be used just in order to save lives
and not for cosmetic purpose.
