I'm going to talk about the notion “Idea of progress”. The progress is
an evolution, an innovation. It is considered like the way to evolve and
upgrade an object or technology. It is supposed to make people live in a
better life but we can wonder if the progress always improves our life.
Firstly I will deal with the scientific progress, and in a second part,
I will talk about the technological progress and its role in the social
progress.
I have studied “Design your baby” which consist in
creating an embryo with PGD, which is the Pré-implantation Genetics
Diagnosis. This technology is a good thing for parents who can't have
children and it can save a first sick child. Indeed, I have studied the
Adam's history. Adam is a baby who was born thanks to PGD, and he had
saved his sister with a transplant. So, this example shows a positive
aspect of progress. But this innovation had been created to choose the
personality of the children. So, parents can choose all characteristics
of their child, to have a perfect baby. However, if all parents had
selected their baby, nobody would be unique because everybody would be
intelligent or beautiful, we would be the same. So, this innovation is
dehumanizing. I think this evolution can't help people to have a better
life.
Robotics, science, technology and biology allow progress.
Indeed, novel technologies appeared as mobile phones or robots which are
increasingly sophisticated. Robots are more and more smart, in the
future, maybe they can equal the men. The consumption is different in
the today's world, because all of people buy a mobile phone, and their
consumption is more important because of innovation. Indeed, there are
novel products. I have studied the case of a shopaholic, it is a person
who has need to buy things, this addiction prevent from having
relations. The mobile phone is an outstanding innovation, for example,
it allows peopling to have a contact with their friends who are far away
of them. But it can be a factor of a lack of communication. Indeed, I
have seen a short movie with Kirsten Dust where two girls had taken a
photo with the celebrity but they hadn't spoken with she.
To
conclude, innovations can helped in the medical progress but we should
not go too far if we want the progress continue to be a help for a
better life. Moreover, innovation in technologies can be a good thing
but it can be a factor of relationship breakdown. So, I think the
progress don't always improve our life.
