I'm going to talk about the notion of seats and forms of power. To begin, I would like to give a definition of this notion. In my opinion power is the ability to control events, or resources; the ability to make things happen despite obstacles, resistance or opposition. Power is often used by the government or by the politicians. In relation to the notion, the subject of my presentation will be India, because it's an emerging country in South Asia and also because it's the second most populous country in the world. My topic is how to change India ?
First, I would like talk about inequalities and old traditions.
In India have a caste system which divided society into five social classes. Nobody can change the caste into they were born and they can't married with someone who was born in other caste. The lowest caste there are the Dalits, who are untouchable or outcaste. In general they live with less 2 dollars a day.. That's not very much.
This caste system has developed a gap among rich and poor. In the one hand have a billionaires who live in big towns and in other hand have dalits who live in slum in unsanitary condition below the poverty line. But for few years there has been emerging middle classe. This system is based on old tradition which oppress the citizens.
The Indian population is majority composed of men mainly because of the dowry tradition. A dowry is a sum of money given by the wife's family to the husband family for compensation to his education. Having sons is financially more attractive than have daughters. So girls go missing because the mothers abort but finding the sex of the baby before birth is illegal because girls are murdered. It's a gendercide. The text Another Girl is a good example. Often in the villages there are twice as many boys as girls.
Moreover boys and girls aren't in equal footing, for instance girls are less educated than boys. Boys could go at school to have a future job unlike girls who can't or rarely. They must stay at home to help their mother and educat their children.
Then, I would like to talk about changes in India.
For some years, the ways have been changing, that is to say now Indian can divorce for example. Or women can be elected to manage the country. This open minding is a big progress for India.
Indeed India develops also his economy. Today some women have a good job, they wine their lives thanks to micro-credit. They have their film industry, Bollywood, and also they are very gifted in sector of information technology or engineering.
Eventually India is a country of contrast, poor India and rich India but also inequalities, old traditions and development of new ways. So India starts to change even if the way is long, one day Indian citizens will be equal of all subjects and more free.
