That India is indeed an emerging country is evident, but Amartya Sen and other Indians point out that large parts of extreme poverty remain in the country. Agriculture, which still occupies about 50% of the working population, is progressing too weakly. The infrastructures (transport, electricity) are still very faulty, generating heavy costs for the economy. Since autumn 2010, several corruption scandals have shaken the central government, creating a climate of suspicion and slowing down of decision-making.
In conclusion, despite the current downturn, the Indian economy remains strong and almost nobody is challenging the country's democratic system in spite of serious flaws. It would be urgent, however, for India to continue its development, to emerge from the crisis of governance that is hurting the economy today and to reduce inflation. Rahul Gandhi, son of Sonia Gandhi, president of the Congress party, currently in the United States (for care, it seems), will he leave his post in the party to succeed Manmohan Singh? And if so, will he succeed in getting his country out of the difficult phase of today.''
