Voilà ma notion d'anglais pour l'expression orale. Je ne sais pas du tout si c'est correct grammaticalement j'aimerais si possible un avis tant sur la forme que dans le contenu. J'ai essayé d'être originale.

Idea of progress

From the beginning of time, mankind had to progress to protect himself against nature, disease and social inequalities. I'm black and I'm a woman and if look back in history, a girl like me would never had a chance to study. It's sure without progress I will not be here in front of you. So we can be defined progress as an improvement, a development to make the world a better place. However the idea of progress doesn’t represent the same thing for philosophers, economists, politicians or some communities like the Amish. Therefore it is interesting to raise the following question: Is the idea of progress universal? Or is it subjective to everyone?

First of all, the idea to go forward, to go to the better is universal. As a matter of fact even the minorities want to improve their living condition and fair trade is a solution. In the fair trade story video they highlight a simple concept. In short, the Westerners agree to pay more expensive their products come from underprivileged countries. It allows labourers to develop their business skills and earn a good living more easily. In return, consumer is certain to buy high-quality goods and they do a good deed because nobody is exploited. I'm in favour of this trade given that fair trade can lead to a win-win-win for consumers, farmers and environment. Consequently, fair trade becomes a universal challenge and everybody realize that marks such as Primark who don't have safe work condition for their workers are uncivilized.

Despite the fact, that the idea of progress is universal, each group has a different expectation of progress. In the spoof "Amish paradise" the singer makes fun of the Amish way of life. Indeed, he believes that the Amish live in Middle Age since they shun what is supposed to be shallow such as electricity, cars, phone so all basics technologies. Furthermore, they don’t accept the mainstream society. Al Yankovic clearly denounces a population against progress. Yet, I'm totally disagreeing with him. In final scene of the movie Witness, when Samuel rings the bell it's the whole community who make police officer drops his weapon. It’s spectacular because many scenes like that are spreading mutual aid values but also environmental values. For instance we can mention the barn scene where everybody works in happiness to build the ecologic house. Finally to my mind it false to say the Amish is against progress. They just have their own idea of progress that has to work in advantage of human relation and not to money and consumption like modern society.

For conclude, I'm persuaded that the idea of progress is in same time objective and universal. I think we can make a connection with the notion myth and hero because everybody has a hero it is universal, but the choice of his hero is totally subjective.
