William the conquerror, born in Falaise and died in Rouen in 1087, was the King of England. William is the illegitimate son of the Duke of Normandy, Robert 1st. At the age of 8, he became Duke of Normandy and later King of England. His reign was tormented because of violence and corruption. William got the firm control of his duchy. In 1064, he had conquered two neighboring province : Brittany and Maine. Meanwhile, the childless King of England, Edward the confessor, whose mother was the sister of Willam's grandfather, promised William's succession to the throne of England. However, when Edward died in 1066, his brother-oin-law and the most powerful of English lords, Harold Godwin, claimed the throne of England for himself. The Witan, a council of English lords who usually participed in the estate decision, supported Harold, irritated by the batrayal.
