Merci d'avance

I am going to talk about the notion « myths and heroes » .First of all, I’m going to give a definition of this notion .A myth is a story about gods or heroes which can be real or fictional , the myth includes legends telling about the beginning of our history and our religions.Secondly a hero can refers to a mythological figure , it’s a person who is admired for his or her achievements, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon .
I will present four documents which are going to help me answer the following key question ; Has what can serve myths and heroes ? ( A quoi peuvent servir les mythes et héros , quel est leur rôle ?)
The first document I have chosen is a text about the first settlers in America which deals with their history .On September 6 , 1620 (sixteen twenty) a group of hundred Puritans , called Pilgrim Fathers left Plymouth Colony , in England more precisely in Massachussetts on board the Mayflower because of their persecution .Indeed Puritans were followers of Calvin and objected to the established Church of England .They were religious fundamentalists who wanted to reform a corrupt church and kingdom and make them much more pure .They believed that they could have direct communication with their God and did not need Church hierarchy .Owing to their belief , they were harshly persecuted sot they decided to left England and went to Holland, then sailed for America .As the title teaches to us they were the first settlers so they bring their culture in America and they contribute to create today’s American culture .Effectively after the winter of 1620 killed a lot of Puritans , the colonists formed a relationship with the neighboring Wampanoag tribe .By autumn of 1621 the settlers had collected enough food to feed the entire community through the coming winter. The Wampanoags joined the colonists for a three-day feast in honor of their bounty which became the Thanksgiving feast .Accordingly , nowadays , to most Americans the Pilgrims are the iconic inspiration for Thanksgiving’s feast .

The second document I have chosen is an audio whose subject is the origins of Maori tattoos.Above all I’ll tell you who are the Maoris .The Maori(s ?) are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand . Mataora , a warrior and Niwareka , a princess were married and both were maoris .The legend says that Mataora punched his wife so she left him ad run back to her father who’s name was Uetonga .He was the King of the underworld .The warrior wanted to apology and he begged for forgivness because he felt guilty and heartbroken .It was a long journey so he was exhausted. As a consequence his paint was dirty and messed up so much so that Niwareka’s family made fun of him .Nonetheless the princess accepted his apology and Uetonga taught him the art of tattoing which he brought back to the human world .After that Maoris began to paint their face with those facial tattoos and this act became a Maori tradition .It tooks part of Maori culture but Maoris also have a rich mythology .For example we can quote an other document studied in class : Whale Rider which is a novel written by Witi Ihimaera. This novel tells us the history of a young girl , Kahu and shows us differents aspects of the culture of Maori tribe particularly the transmitting of the values .
Thus those two documents are about the Maori myth .We understand that a myth is very important for a people, it allows it to create is own history .Moreover , through legends , the people can transmit some values .As an example , the facial tattoos are a celebration of Maori culture , a physical statement of a person’s identity.

The last document is an article taken from Wikipedia which concerns the student-led gun control organization created by survivors of the Stoneman Douglas High School Shooting. Those teenagers fight for changing the laws , they want tighter regulations to prevent gun violence .To carry out their project they create a Facebook group , now follow by 35 000 followers, and many Twitter accounts .They also announce a nationwide protest which took place on March , 24 2018 and brought together hundreds of thousands of protesters. This organization and especially those members could be considered as heroes because they contribute to making the world better .Indeed thanks to both houses voted for various gun control measures and guns laws have changed in Florida.Furthermore thanks to them the subject of guns is more visible which enables one more time to change the world .
