Présentation of road 66
I) Route 66 is an old American road that linked Chicago (Illinois) to Santa Monica (California), between 1926 and 1985 in the United States. Its length is 3945 kilometres.Route 66 crosses three time zones and eight states (east to west: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California). Its central point is in the small town of Adrian, Texas. It was the first transcontinental paved road in America. The Americans call it The Mother Road or Main Street USA.
II) Declin of road 66
Route 66 was officially decommissioned on June 27,19853. Although it no longer has an official existence, it retains a mythical character and is undoubtedly the most famous American route. Since the early 1990s, movements have been created to ensure its preservation, and initiatives to develop tourism are increasingly numerous. The road is thus again signposted in several places under the name Historic Route 66.
1940 /1950With the Second World War, Route 66 became a privileged route for the transportation of military equipment and troops, but it would retain the after-effects of the incessant transportation of heavy equipment.In the 1950s, the democratization of the automobile and vacation drains millions of Americans onto the Road, fond of the landscapes it offers and the brand new National Parks it serves.The state of the Road, as well as its sizing, are no longer adapted to the traffic it has to support.
