I am going to talk about the notion of Myths and Heroes. First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion : A myth can be defined as a story about gods or heroes, it can be a popular belief or tradition or a false notion. A hero can be a mythological figure, a person who is admired for his or her achievement, a superhero or maybe a role model or an icon. I will more specifically talk about the myth of witch hunt in america, some role model like Charles Chaplin, and Donald Trump which can be qualified like a sort of anti-hero. We will ask us to what extent the term of witch hunt is repeat in the American history.

In Salem, in the 17th century, more than 150 people were accused of witchcraft. It was really a wave of accusations, paranoia and hysteria. This case had a deep impact: it indirectly led to the founding principles of the USA.
But three centuries later, between 1950 and 1960, death sentences, mock trials and mass hatred punctuated the grim years of McCarthyism. In the early 1950s, American leaders repeatedly told the public that they should be fearful of subversive Communist influence in their lives. Communists could be lurking anywhere, using their positions as school teachers, college professors, labor organizers, artists, or journalists to aid the program of world Communist domination. This paranoia about the internal Communist threat—what we call the Red Scare—reached a fever pitch between 1950 and 1954, when Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin, a right-wing Republican, launched a series of highly publicized probes into alleged Communist penetration of the State Department, the White House, the Treasury, and even the US Army. During Eisenhower’s first two years in office, McCarthy’s shrieking denunciations and fear-mongering created a climate of fear and suspicion across the country. No one dared tangle with McCarthy for fear of being labeled disloyal.. A witch hunt began anew at this time. The witches of Salem is the story of another time and nevertheless so contemporary.
After that, we have studied in class a extract of the film "One of the Hollywood ten". The Cold War in full swing, and during the "witch hunt" Biberman learns that he is registered in the blacklisted of Hollywood directors. Thus, his entourage takes away from him because he was suspected of having communist ties.
Nowaday, the term “witch hunt” is used by Donald Trump to qualified a russian investigation.

For the witch of Salem, the term of witch hunt is used, because some women were suspected to be a witch. During the period of the Red Scare and McCarthyism, the term witch hunt is used in the fact that some people were suspected to be communist and must be denounced by the other people. Today Donal trump used it for a russian investigation. In that way we can say that the term witch hunt is repeated in the American history, always to denounce a category of person.Finally, witch hunt are in the mind of the American people, because it is a part of American history and this term of witch hunt has been used many times but with a different meaning.
