Because history and the passage of time blurs the reality. In truth, the Suffragettes carried out many atrocities, including arson & terrorism, in the name of freedom & equal rights for women. If anything, they set back the achievement of female suffrage some years. The political mood in westminster, and the country, was moving in favour of extending the vote. But their lawlessness riled MPs who had been supportive, and especially Queen Victoria who had far more influence on government than many thought.
