San Francisco Family Day Kite Festivals
In 1978 the Mayor of San Francisco first proclamed an official "Family Day" nin association with the Family Day Kite Festival first held on Father's Day 1973.Over the years,the FDKF attracted professional and amateur kite fliers,renewable energy advocates and sustainability enthusiasts from all over the world,providing beautiful,educational and healthy entertainment for families of all ages,while the traditional idea of 'family' was redefined as 'an unbreakable bond of love and friendship.Every year,one weekend in September,families came to watch spectacular kites flown high above the Marina Green -from the acrobatic kites of world champions to the hand-made entries of amateurs,and free kites were provided for kids of all ages.
The Marma Site was declared unfit after flooding in 2013 but a new kite festival was later organized in another part of the city.The memories of the FDKF and intergenerational family values live on !
