Through the ages, Poveglia has been the rendezvous of all the Venetians struck by fate. In the 16th century, the island was transformed into a lazaret, a place of isolation for the sick of the plague, and thus would have become the last home of 160,000 people. The island remained a quarantine site until the Second World War, when it was occupied by the troops and used to store the bodies of the victims.
