Wheelchair basketball (more often called handibasket) is a sport like any other simply more adapted to people in wheelchairs. It was originally conceived as a rehabilitation activity for veterans of the Second World War (1939-45). It was created by Sir Ludwig Guttman (founder of the Paralympics). World War II clothing was played in the Veterans Administration hospitals in Birmingham and Framingham. It made its appearance in France in 1955 because of two physiotherapists: Michel Boubée and Alain Bossion. The first Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960. Today it is practiced in competition by more than 25,000 people in 90 countries around the world.
