I think what Marcus Garvey was trying to say is that the knowledge of our history is essential.

Because all of us are living histories; we have ancestors, those who came before us, and whose DNA we carry. We also have traditions, culture, religious practices, education, work experiences, and we benefit from science and technology. All these have a background reaching back into time. We build on this platform to take us into the future.

And without knowing our history or where we come from that might been what he meant by "A people without a knowledgeof their past  history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots". It connects the past to the present.
