The text is about a Dutch girl (from Amsterdam) who emigrated to America after world war two.
She explains that during the summer, she's going to look after two little girls. Their mother works as a waitress. The lady hasn't got a husband, and the girls are six and four.
The apartment where she's going to work is on the second floor, and it's facing a busy street.
The lady interview her and tells her what to do.
When she arrives, around eight o'clock, to look after the girls, they are playing outside with other kids. The oldest one is easy and helpful but the little one doesn't always listen that well.
The Dutch girl knows how to look after them : she knows how to give them supper (because the mother always lets food behind), how to help them wash their hands and face and to get ready for bed. She even knows how to sing a song for them.
But she doesn't know what to do if something unexpected happens. And one day, something unusual does happen : she can't see the four years old anymore. Panicked, she goes looking for her while screaming her name. She's afraid that the little one got kidnapped. After a few hours she finally finds Patricia among a group of kids and tells her to never go so far away again. After she has put the girls to sleep in the evening, she feels relieved.
