Jean Cabut was a French caricaturist and artist. His pen name was "Cabu". He was born in 1938 in Chalons-en-Champagne. He was assassinated in the Charlie Hebdo offices on January 7th, 2015.
Cabut studied art in Paris at the École Estienne. His first drawings were published in 1954 by the local newspaper. He went to Algeria to fight in the Algerian War. While he was there his work was published in the army newspaper called Bled and Paris Match.
After he left the army, he started the Hara-Kiri magazine. He worked with other publications and the TV programme Récré A2. All the while drawing political caricatures for Charlie Hebdo and Le Canard Enchainé.
Cabut was first married to Isabelle Monin. They had a son together, Emmanuel Cabut, also know as the Mano Solo, a French singer who died in 2010. Later he married Véronique Brachet.
