They have to give up their old lives because the three of them Ned, Emily and Jamie) have changed because of a family trauma when they 're younger. Now they 've to grow up to go through this to become positives adults.
Physical activities in really important : the way they're destroying themselves is so intense that it proves they've got a huge energy. But until now they've turned this energy into a negative one (l'énergie du désespoir). Physical activities is going to "wash up" their brain and turn it into something positive.
Those teenagers had such a behaviour because when they went through their family problems (death, divorce or remarriage), the parent who was still there might not have try enough to begin a real discussion, explanations. Too many parents don't speak enough with their children thinking they 're are too young, that it's adults'problems.. But it's totally wrong. I know it from my own experience...
