Sagot :
The notion I’m going to deal with regards myths and heroes. A myth is a legend, but nowadays a myth refers to a popular belief or tradition embodying the ideals and institutions of a society. A hero is a person with superhuman abilities but nowadays, it refers to a person who is admired for his courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Myths and heroes are present in many societies but they probably have different characteristics depending on the cultures. However they have something in common: they allow (to permit = to authorize) to have a model and they convey an ideal.
If myths and heroes are a mold for everyone, to what extent do myths or heroes gather people?
I’m going to start by talking about myths and heroes who have been a factor of social cohesion. People need to be unified. They need to feel that they belong to a group, a community. They are always looking for individual or collective identity. To satisfy its needs, the society creates its own myths that are incarnations of the values of an era. Indeed the myth carries a cultural identity in which the nation can recognize itself. For example, during the 19th century, the myth of cowboys has been created. The myth of the cowboy was actually a real phenomenon based on a social and economic demand but it became a myth for psychological reasons. Indeed, as a rising nation, the USA were in search of roots and values, which every one could identify with. At this time, after the Civil War in 1862, the cities on the East coast of the United States were deprived of resources whereas in Texas, over 6 million cattle roamed wild. So people needed a hero who could drive that kind of cattle from Texas to the railroad in Kansas. And this hero was named cowboy. The video documentary titled “America, the Story of Us” is an illustration of how cowboy were seen as heroes. Indeed, the cowboys had to face a lot of dangers like the rustlers (people who steal the cattle). Then, they have to be brave because the West was wild, vast and lawless. As a result, they have been considered as patriotic heroes because they brought food to people living in the East. Thus, the myth of the cowboy is bound to the sense of belonging to a community because every member of this community has the same model. That’s why the myth can be a factor of social cohesion.

Indeed, Martin Luther King was an American icon because he delivered a famous speech “I have a dream” about the freedom of the African-Americans in 1963. In his speech, he denounces the conditions of the black people in the US in the past and at the time of his speech.
The wall painting of Mr. Brainwash shows 3 icons: Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Barack Obama. These 3 models fought for the equality of black and white people. They embody symbols. For example, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King represent the symbol of the struggle against the racial segregation during the 50’s; and Barack Obama is the symbol of American democracy, becoming the first black president. Indeed, Barack Obama rallied the Americans behind his cause. This illustrates the fact that a hero can gather people about values which are the equality and the democracy.
Furthermore, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King are considered as heroes by many people because, before the Civil Rights Movement, when white people were thought to be better than all other races, they decided it was time to change this state of mind. So they rose peacefully against the Whites: for instance Rosa parks refused to let her seat to a White because she considered that she should have the same rights as the Whites. Martin Luther King supported her and then, he became the leader of the nonviolent struggle against racial segregation. For people, they are heroes because they fought for their convictions and ideas with determination, courage and devotion. People admire them because they succeeded and did what they were dreaming of, so that these kinds of hero join people about one message.
To conclude, we can say that myths and heroes gather people. Indeed, a myth comes from a social or economic demand, and creates a social cohesion. It’s the same for a hero. Indeed, few persons have a capacity to change the mind of many people, to convey their ideas, their message. They represent a model which people can follow. So people are unified around a same hero.
