past simple = actions passées terminées
past continuous = actions passées qui étaient en cours
Quand les 2 sont dans la même phrase > celle au prétérit simple interrompt celle qui était en cours (prétérit continuous)
Il peut arriver qu'il y a 2 prétérit simple
she ran away when he heard the police = les 2 actions sont soudaines et simultanées = prétérit simple
OU 2 continuous
while she was dancing, he was having a drink= 2 actions passés en cours et simultanées
6- They bought a few apples and made an apple pie.
7- Her daughter was crying in her room when she came home.
8- When their dog started barking they were sleeping.
9- He was working quietly at his desk when suddenly the door opened and a man rushed in.
10- He walked across the room and closed the window.
11- As the other children were sleeping, Sophie got up and went to the window.
12- Mathilda decided to go to the village library by herself. When the librarian arrived, she was reading The Secret Garden.
13- The giant came up/ OU / was coming up the streets, Sophie looked at him and around her all the children were sleeping . She froze with terror.
14- When Mathilda entered the room , her father was watching TV.
15- The whole fox family was hiding in a burrow when the men arrived on their machines.
16- Jonathan knocked on the door : he was uneasy as if somebody opr something was watching him.
17- Sophie was terrified. The Big Friendly Giant was coming down the street, he was holding her in a sort of bundle.

Je pense que tout ça vient d'une histoite avec Sophie, Mathilda et le "Giant" et je ne connais pas l'histoire..... Alors pour la 13 : The giant came up the street ou was coming up ...je ne sais pas...
OK je viens de voir que c'est une histoire de Roald Dahl.... Donc si vous l'avez étudiée tu dois pouvoir choisir pour la 13....
