I'm going to talk about the idea of progress. To begin, I'd like to state the definition of progress. Progress is the belief that the world can become better. There are improvements in manifolds: scientific,medical,social,economic,cultural... ( consider revision of the sentence: manifold)
But we can ask ourselves: "What effect does this progress have on our society? Does it have a positive or a negative effect?
On the one hand, I think progress is essential to evolve. We need progress. History is made up of progress and evolution that have allowed the world to be what it is today. For example,we can talk about the 60's.We studied several documents about this period. I chose one: an article from the British website marketing magazine. It was published in 2002. This text deals with the evolution of mentalities in England,with the arrival of the Hippies, which marks a powerful sexual and cultural revolution. In this text, music evolution is also mentioned, with famous music bands like the Beatles,still famous today. But, the most important is the women's place in society. Before the 60s women were only housewives,they had to cook,clean up, raise children...Women were not listened (No one gave ears to women), not really considered as woman. However, It all changed in the 60s: the pill appears,woman can be pretty (not clear why and how), wear make up without be considered as whores...(end the sentence using the conjunction 'and' in the last two points or y using the phrase just to mention a few, and so on)We can observe that on the photograph next to the text. On the foreground, we can see two pretty bon women,well dressed,with bright colors. They are looking for shoes during their shopping and they seem to be happy.
The coming to power of Harold Wilson also demonstrates the wish of developing new technologies.
Author wants to show us that they were a lot of changes during this period, especially in England.
When I read this text, I have the impression or rather the feeling that during this period,everything was possible, dreams were becoming reality and it was definitively a period of optimism.
Although we have seen how progress can be positive and bring good tidings to people,we are also going to see that progress can be negative and dangerous.
On the other hand, progress can become dangerous,specially in terms of science. We studied several documents which shows negative aspects and effects of scientific progress. We have seen a cartoon, where people who are considered 'different' are ejected,they don't have a place in society. If you do not correspond to the norms, you are rejected. Everyone is a clone; Or, it's dangerous for society to reject people because it's the beginning of racism and discrimination. This cartoon criticizes the fact that in the future,we will have the possibility to choose our babies in terms of desired features.
To make humanity complete, you have to have some extent of diversity in people. So if everybody is the same, there isn't humanity (revise the sentence to make it more clear).
We also studied Design your baby,constituted (referred to in two texts) of two texts. First one is an extract from CHS Globe online, published on the 29th January 2010. This text is a science fiction, where people can ask for a baby the exact features they want, just like in a supermarket. If people could choose their children, it would be only for the rich people,and hence this would result in some discrimination.
At the beginning, it was only science fiction but now, it's turning into reality. Choosing physical characteristic is a progress, a huge one, but it's dangerous.
The second text deals with the story of Molly Nash,15 years old. She suffers from a far illness. To cure Molly, her parents turn to PGD and give birth to her little brother. He has been created to donate cells to his sister, to cure her.
I think it's not good for the little boy because all of his life, he will think that he is not loved, he is here only because they needed him for his sister.
