Acte I
The feud between the Capulet and the Montaigu families brings havoc to the entire city of Verona and distress prince Escalus . Romeo , heir of the Montaigu family has fallen madly in love with Rosaline and is absolutely desperate because she rejects him. His friends , Benvolio and Mercutio try to cheer him and induce him to go under cover , at the party given by the Capulet for their daughter Juliet . Romeo agrees since Rosaline will be there. Juliet is encouraged by her mother and her nanny to look for a suitable husband during the ball , even if her father Capulet is in no hurry to get his daughter married . During the ball, Juliet definitely replaces Rosaline in Romeo’s heart
Acte II
Romeo sneaks in Capulet’s garden in order to get a glimpse of Juliet . When Juliet appears at the window , believing herself to be alone she confesses her love for Romeo ; then Romeo in turn proclaims his love for her. Romeo takes advice from his confessor , Lawrence, a Franciscan friar . Friar Lawrence although sorry because of Romeo’s fickleness , sees in his union with Juliet a hope to bring the two families together . Romeo asks Juliet, trough her nanny ,to pretend a confession in order to go to Lawrence ‘s place where the Friar will secretly marry them
Acte III
Now married to Juliet , Romeo does not want to fight a duel against his wife’s cousin : Tybalt who has insulted him
Mercutio wants to fight Tybalt for him , Romeo tries to stop them but in doing so is involuntarily responsible for the mortal wound that kills his friend. Enraged, Romeo kills Tybalt . The Prince banishes him immediately from Verona. “For this offence we banish him on the spot”. Juliet devasted by the news (given by her nanny) manages to spend a night with Romeo before he flees into exile to Mantua. But her parents have found a husband for her and decide to hasten her union with count Pâris . Juliet refuses to comply and faces the wrath of Lord and Lady Capulet . Juliet goes to Friar Lawrence cell and asks for his help
Acte IV
Friar Lawrence suggests that Juliet take a potion which will give her the appearance of death .He will then send word to Romeo to come and take her away from the Capulet’s vault in which she will be laid. In the morning Juliet , inanimate, is discovered by her nanny . All believe her dead and mourn her deeply . The funeral takes place as planned by Friar Lawrence

The Scene of the tomb by Joseph Wright of Derby (1790). Friar Lawrence 's messenger :Brother John ,cannot bring his letter to Romeo because of the plague and Romeo hears only of Juliet ‘s death through Balthazar . He goes back to Verona and resolves to die on his wife’s tomb. He meets there with count Pâris bringing flowers to his dead bethroted . The count challenges Romeo who fights a duel and kills him .Romeo enters the crypt and says goodbye to his Juliet before swallowing a vial of poison . Friar Lawrence discovers with horror his lifeless body. Juliet wakes up and realizing that Romeo is dead, gives him a last kiss before killing herself with Romeo's dagger. Prince Escalus, a Montaigu whose wife died of grief during the night and the Capulet parents meet in the cemetery. Friar Lawrencet tells them the true story of the lovers giving as evidence a letter left by Romeo . The two families reconcile themselves according to the wish of theCapulets and Montaigu says that he will erect a golden statue in memory of their children.
