As a scientist I believe that human cloning is fully forbidden for reproductive purposes and the creation of human embryos solely for the purpose of research or of extracting stem cells. Now we do need to develop from stem cells of complex organs such as the heart, kidney or liver etc. should be encouraged for in-depth research. So far we haven't been authorized and financed for such research. Organ donation has a very high potential of saving lives and increasing the quality of life for patients. But we need to be realistic and be aware that organ and tissue donation rates has relatively remained flat over the last decade in industrialized countries. So I raise the question should we let end-stage organ diseased people accept the situation and accept their death. Right now we are aware that for instance, all the artificial hearts are still experimental and so patients should accept to non-proven surgery. That is a sacrifice for humanity!
Cloning organ and tissues should be one of the top priority for medical, biological etc, research and governmental policy with full support from governments within the legal and ethics framework. Human cloning should now be renamed cell cloning for patients' end-stage organ. The organ when we achieve this will automatically be compatible with the patients and thus preventing from taking strong and daily medication for bearing someone else's organ. Should we keep on going on patients to wait for somebody's death to remain alive. I've got strong doubts about it.
