Bonjour, quelqu'un peut corriger mes fautes et me dire si je suis dans la bonne voie dans ma synthèse car je vais bientôt passer mon oral d'anglais :
I’m going to talk about the Idea of Progress. First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion: The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change - a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.
What are advantages and the inconveniences of progress?
On one hand, we will see advantages of progress, on other hand, we will see inconveniences.
First of all, We studied “Design your baby”. This document it is composed of two texts. The first, is about PGD (Pre-implantation Genetics Diagnosis). A geneticist speaks with a future parent who wants an ideal baby, with particular physical traits and no disease. The geneticist puts forward the positive aspect of this technique, like predict certain genetic diseases and ensure the chosen embryo is healthy : there are medical objectives. The second text is a newspaper article drawn from USA Today published in October 2010,it talks about Molly Nash and her brother Adam Nash. She is a teenager who was born with a rare disease. Molly is affected with Fanconi Animia and she was saved by her brother Adam. Normally, Molly was destined to die before the age of 7 but in 2000, his brother Adam cured Molly thanks to a transplant. So this text shows a positive aspect of progress. It’s an innovative scientific progress. Adam is the first designer baby, when he was born his blood from umbilical cord was transplanted to his sister. This article shows the advantage of the scientific progress, in fact the medical benefits allow saving life but the designers babies are disputed. Science is advancing humanity because there is improvement in the domain scientific. At the medical level, progress helps treat more illness and thus consequently save many lives. Then, We studied a video it talks about Hugh Herr who is a research director at MIT. Hugh Herr was a prodigy rock climber: by age eight. Him and his friend Jeff Batzer was one took by the storm, they are stay three nights -29°C degree temperatures. Hugh Herr lost his both legs. After having lost his legs, He manufactures the next generation of bionic limbs, robotic prosthetics inspired by its own members. This prevented of stay disabled. It's advantage because he cans walk and have news technologies it's advantageous, Progress provides accessibility to ease. Progress can facilitate the daily lives of consumers. For example, nowadays we use the washer while before there is not the invention of washer. We will see a cartoon on "odd man out" shows a factory who creates humans. In this factory all the humans are the same, same face, eyes, mouth, underpants and we can suppose they also have the same temper. These similarities are possible thanks to eugenics, a science which studies methods of improving the genetic composition of the human race by selective breeding. And if there are men who doesn't conform to the regulations because they are too small, pale, don't have the right hair colour or have a disproportional limb in their bodies for example they will be thrown into the dustbin. This cartoon is very interesting to illustrate the notion idea of progress because the artist denounces the idea of perfecting human genetics and the resulting dehumanization. We saw a bad vision of progress through a cartoon.

Now we will see inconveniences of progress. Due to progress, there is a decrease in human capital companies which implies an increase in unemployment. There is an overuse of technology products and electronics. This overuse therefore result in pollution due to increased waste, resulting in a significant impact on the ecological environment.Electronic products are, for some, recognized as a transmitter of electromagnetic waves such as cell phone, which leads to health problems.
To conclude at first science and innovations are here to help people. But man’s ambition goes to far. We thought Progress was only a way to make human life easier, and a way to fight diseases but some people decided to use advanced technology and play God. They want to control everything because they are scared of the unknown. That’s why I think we have to create robots without Aritifical Intelligence and preserve our ethical values like freedom, solidarity and humanity. I think that the idea of progress in the domain scientific should this evolve to save the life people. If a day I couldn't get pregnant I will follow a treatment as the future parent in the document "Design your baby".

Sagot :

I’m going to talk about the Idea of Progress. First of all I would like to PROVIDE a definition of this CONCEPT (notion): The idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change SUCH AS- a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place.

What are the advantages and DISADVANTAGES of progress? (en anglais on peut aussi parler de pros and cons of Progress)

On THE one hand, we will see the PROS of progress, on THE other hand, we will see the CONS.
First of all, we studied “Design your baby”. THIS DOCUMENT IS composed of two texts. The first ONE DEALS WITH PGD (Pre-implantation Genetics Diagnosis). A geneticist discusses with prospective parents who wish a designer baby (perfect and tailored baby).  The future baby is expected to present with particular physical FEATURES and with no disease. The geneticist puts forward the positive aspect of this technique, like predict certain genetic diseases and ensure the chosen embryo is healthy: there are medical objectives.

The second text is a newspaper article from “USA Today” published in October 2010.  This article relates to Molly Nash and her brother Adam Nash. She is a teenager who was born with a rare disease. Molly is affected with Fanconi Animia and she was saved by her brother Adam. Normally, Molly was expected to die prior to the age of 7; but in 2000, his brother Adam cured Molly thanks to a transplant. So this text shows a positive aspect of progress. It’s an innovative scientific progress. Adam is the first designer baby, when he was born his blood from umbilical cord was transplanted to his sister. This article shows the advantage of the scientific progress; In fact the medical benefits saved her life but the designer’s babies are disputed (JE NE COMPRENDS PAS LE SENS). SCIENCE contributes to human welfare and progress because there is an improvement in the domain scientific. At the medical level, progress helps treat more illnesses and thus consequently save many lives.

Then, we studied a video and discussed on Hugh Herr who is a research director at MIT. Hugh Herr was a prodigy rock climber: By the age of eight, he (c’est plus anglais) and his friend Jeff Batzer were (pluriel) taken by a THUNDERSTORM and had to stay three nights long by MINUS 29 degrees Celsius. Hugh Herr lost his both legs. After having lost his legs, he manufactured the next generation of bionic limbs, robotic prosthetics inspired by its own members. This prevented from STAYING disabled. This was a big advantage: he could walk and thus progress had made him life easier. Progress can facilitate consumers’ everyday lives. For example, nowadays we use washers (dish washer?) while before washers had not been invented/created.

We will see a cartoon on "odd man out" relating to a factory that creates human-beings. In this factory all human-beings are alike: same face, same eyes, same mouth, same underpants and we can suppose they also have the same temper. These stereotyped artificial human-beings can be possible due to eugenics.  Eugenics is a science which studies methods of improving the genetic composition of the human race by selective breeding. And if there are men/women (??) who don't comply with the regulations because they are too small, pale, don't have the right hair colour or have a disproportional limb in their bodies for example,  they will be thrown into the dustbin. This cartoon is very interesting as it can illustrate the notion of progress because the artist is incriminating the idea of perfecting human genetics and the resulting dehumanization. We became aware of the poor image of what science development (progress??) can be through a cartoon.

Now we will see disadvantages of progress. Due to progress, there is a decrease in human capital companies which involves unemployment decrease. There is an over-use of technology products and electronics. Therefore this over-use result in pollution due to increased waste, resulting in a significant impact on the ecological environment. Electronic products are, for some, recognized as a transmitter of electromagnetic waves such as cell phone, which could lead to health problems.

To conclude at first, science and innovations are here to help people. But human-beings’ ambition goes too far. We thought progress was only a way to ease people’s life and a way of fighting against diseases but some people decided to use advanced technology and act as God. They want to control everything because they feared the unknown. That’s why I think we have to create robots without Artificial Intelligence and preserve our ethical values like freedom, solidarity and humanity. I think that the idea of progress in the scientific area should evolve to save people’s life. If one day I cannot get pregnant I WOULD obtain medical treatment as future parent (prospective parent) as it is clearly described in the document entitled "Design your baby".
