We are going to talk about the notion of “Idea of Progress”. The Idea of Progress is the idea that the different advances in technology, science, and social organization can produce an improvement in the human condition. That is, people can become happier in terms of quality of life, through economic development, and the application of science and technology. However, the progress is still debated between those who consider that it’s beneficial and those for whom it’s harmful. It's why we chose to answer this research question; Progress is still good? Should we fear progress?
To begin we are talking about genetic manipulation, then about the new technologies and to finish we are going to talk about the social network.
The scientific progress allows improving life condition and keeping alive sufferers. The Scientists find medical treatment which slows down or cure diseases, however Scientists are dreaming to eradicate all illness possibility as soon as the embryo.
They are doing research about “designer baby” is a child, born to save a family member who is affected with a fatal disease. The child is conceived through in-vitro fertilization and “pre-implantation genetic diagnosis”. The child is destined to provide an organ or cell transplant in order to cure the illness.
Some people object to the designer baby for moral reasons. On the one hand they‘re afraid that the children became a commercial production because with the genetic manipulation we could choose cosmetic characteristics in order to create a human model of perfection. Of course the principal Scientists’ interest is to cure genetics, diseases, but we know the human can be able to do terrible thing like the atomic bomb.
There are also in the same case, The GMO (genetically modified organism) fields it was considered as a solution to feed the world people durably. This type field permits a better yield than a traditional field because crops have a better resistance against bacterias and climatic conditions. But people don't trust and don't buy this GMO food because it causes diseases.
Since 1950, a lot of new technology has appeared in our life. Phones, computers, tablets, television have developed over time. For example, Apple, a multinational company, is the source of much of this technological development. Apple was created in 1973 by Steve Jobs. The first product of the brand was a computer with, as its name suggests, an apple. It's marketing approach is based on innovation and esthetics of its products which is often appreciated by consumers.
Apple has managed to establish itself through innovative ideas, such as iPod, iPhone and the MacBook Air. This example shows how business innovation of new electronic devices are sources of technical progress because Apple made sure to increase the comfort of the life of man. Other technologies that have revolutionized the way of life include the creation of internet by Tim Berners-lee in 1980 and the development of 3D printer since 2000 which permits to make some object useful for our life like prosthesis
These devices can be used badly like fabricate guns with the 3D printer or hack bank accounts with computer.
Moreover, the phone and computer is an important part of person's life. The important utilization leads problems like obesity or a bad relation with other persons.
The creation of social networks has advantages and drawbacks. Therefore, taking the example of Facebook, on the one hand, you can meet like-minded new friends and rediscovering long-lost friends so it's a great communication tool, you can also use it to relax and escape from real life, but on the other hand, it may be a way to avoid facing problems and solving them, you may escape your responsibility and it can become addictive.
Also, you mustn’t forget to restrain yourself in order to respect others and protect yourself because information on the Internet can be a potential obstacle to your future, they never disappear and are dangerous. So the social networks can be dangerous if used inappropriately.
The study of this concept allows us to understand that new technologies can improve the comfort, health, economics, politics, philosophy, the environment and knowledge of man, but they can be dangerous to inappropriate use, that is if we do not control their use.
Thanks to the medical progress, we can save life, improve life condition and maybe in the future eradicate some genetic diseases. But the genetically modified organism needs some improvement and time to be accepted by people.
So we can say progress is neither all good or all bad. Put into the hands of human beings, that knowledge can be used for medicine or great advances. It’s not scientific knowledge that is either good or evil, but the application of it.
