A horror movie is a genre of films whose purpose is to arouse fear in the viewer. This kind of film is generally not recommended for young spectators as well as for sensitive people. We can distinguish different sub-genres of horror films although a film can be in several categories.
The Slashers:
Generally aimed at an adolescent audience, slashers are one of the most popular horror film genres. The scenario is usually based on a serial killer chasing and killing (usually with a knife or other sharp object) a group of friends, one after the other. Among the best-known of this genre are Tosse Hooper's Chainsaw Massacre, John Carpenter's Halloween Series, the Friday 13th saga, Remember ... last summer or the Freddy series as well than that of Scream by Wes Craven.

Psychological horror film is a genre of horror cinema very subtle: here, fear is based on psychology, thoughts and imagination, both characters and spectators. Often related to the genre of the fantastic, this genre was seen a lot in the second half of the twentieth century. We can cite such films as Psychosis, Shining, Rosemary's Baby, The Blair Witch Project, or Repulsion.
Experimental / Unhealthy
In these films, fear is based on the incomprehension and strangeness of what is happening on screen, this strange feeling described by Sigmund Freud as "the disturbing strangeness". It can be found in many movies, such as Begotten, An Andalusian Dog, or all other David Lynch films (Eraserhead, Lost Highway, Inland Empire)
Epidemic / Apocalypse
Some horror movies choose to present the viewer with a world (or sometimes just a city) where an epidemic is spreading that kills or mutates (and sometimes both) anyone who becomes infected. The movies of zombie invasions generally belong to this genre with the most famous of them, George A. Romero's Night of the Undead.
