Salut les amis, est-ce que vous pouvez me dire les grosses fautes flagrantes de ce devoir s'il vous plaît? Celles qui me feront perdre le plus de points. Merci d'avance!
Today I’m going to speak about the notion of
the idea of progress which is a process of improving or developping nearer to
achieving something. There are several areas : we have scientific
progress, environmental progress, or social progress. I’m going to talk about
social progress and be focused on the women’s rights. Is it that there has been
real progress in women's rights since the XXth Century ? First,
I’m going to talk about the development of women’s rights in the XXth
Century and in a 2nd part, I will explain the limits of their rights.
In the XXth Century, the
woman was seen as inferior as the man. In fact men had the power over them,
they were not treated on a equal footing, for instance when it’s about their
wage. As we have studied in class, in the extract from Made in Dagenham, Mrs
O’Grady and her co-workers are fighting for an equal pay between men and women.
But since the beginning of the nineties,
women’s salaries approach those of men little by little. Thanks to the Matrimonial Property Act,
contraception, abortion and divorce became possible since 1968. We can notice
that abortion became possible in France in 1975 thanks to a woman, Simone Veil. And in many countries, women have the right
vote since the XXth Century (for example
in 1920 in the USA, in 1929 in Great-Britain and in 1944 in France). And
finally, now chores are not just for women, indeed men take part to this
homework.
However, this progress has limits : there is always the glass ceiling. This last is a kind of discriminatory barrier that prevents women from rising to positions of power, it exists few bosses who are women. I can add that there are many jobs which are less readily available because considered as « man’s job » like in medicine, law or business.
Moreover, if we can speak about progress in
occidental countries, what about women’s rights in Arabic peninsula for
instance ? In many families, girls are considered as houseworkers and
can’t go to school and learn unlike
boys. Or women can’t wear the clothes they want, like the pant or the Jeans. I
can also notice that some girls doesn’t choose their husband, often unknown and
older. So, we can’t speak about a real
progress.
Through many facts, from the XXth Century to nowadays, the evolution of people’s mentalities helps to the evolution of the laws and thus to the women’s rights. Even the full equality does not exist yet everywhere, women’s rights has evolved. We can quote Barack Obama « Today woman still made only 77cents to every man’s dollar, and the pay gap is even wilder for woman of colour » So we can link this notion to Myths and Heroes, for instance Rosa Parks was an American Black woman who was fighting against racism.
