Globe Theatre in London Shakespeare's Original

The Globe Theatre was originally built in 1599 by Shakespeare and other playwrights. It was a large, round open-air theatre. There were three stories (étages) of covered seating for 3,000 spectators and another area just in front of the stage where spectators could stand on the ground and watch the performance.

At the start of every play, the admission collectors took boxes of money to an office backstage called a “box office.” Pretty cool that this term came all the way from Shakespeare!

No actresses performed at the Globe in the early days. Boys were dressed as women to play the feminine roles.

The theatre burned down and then was rebuilt, but morals of the time shut down all plays, which were seen as “vulgar.”

In 1997, the theatre was rebuilt as “The Shakespeare Globe Theater.” The construction is a near replica of the original playhouse, very close by to the original site.
